5SOS’ Ashton Irwin calls out Billboard over Number 1 controversy

Ashton Irwin has announced his first solo single and album outside of 5 Seconds of Summer.

5 Seconds of Summer's Ashton Irwin has surprised fans by releasing his first solo single with an album to come next month.

2020 has already been a huge year for 5SOS. Not only did the band release their hits 'No Shame', 'Old Me' and 'Wildflower' respectively but they also dropped their criticially-acclaimed fourth studio album CALM. The record was a Number 1 in the UK and Australia, and it only missed out on the top spot in the US due to a controversial chart error that fans called out.

Now, 5SOS are giving fans even more to get excited about. Ashton has just dropped a solo single called 'Skinny Skinny'.

Yes. You heard that correctly. On top of a whole 5SOS album, Ashton is blessing us with brand new solo music this year and you can listen to the first taste of it, 'Skinny Skinny', right now. Fans discovered the song after Ashton launched a new website: https://ashtonirwinofficial.com/. Shortly afterds, Ashton took to Instagram to announce it.

He wrote: "It is with a great explosion of joy and with my entire soul that I am proudly announcing to you all that I am releasing my first solo record. The album explores my inner philosophies and feelings about the walk of life I have found myself on. I’m ridiculously excited to share this with you, it feels like this record has been over a decade in the making. It brings me the greatest joy of all that I am in a band that allows me to create freely inside and outside of it. I can’t wait for you to hear it."

He then added: "You can pre-order my debut solo album ‘Superbloom’ out October 23rd everywhere tonight. Pre-save now from the link in my profile."

We must fight against a common darkness that shadows our ability to live truthfully, to live without self doubt, and without self destruction and love ourselves for what we are. When writing “Skinny Skinny” I first thought of myself, and many other young peoples struggles with body image and particularly body dysmorphia. It’s something I’ve never confronted in a creative form and I am feeling strong in saying “Skinny Skinny” goes directly to that painful place in my mind.

Discussing 'Skinny Skinny', Ashton wrote: "The first single “Skinny Skinny” is out everywhere tonight at 9pm PT. We must fight against a common darkness that shadows our ability to live truthfully, to live without self doubt, and without self destruction and love ourselves for what we are."

He continued: "When writing “Skinny Skinny” I first thought of myself, and many other young peoples struggles with body image and particularly body dysmorphia. It’s something I’ve never confronted in a creative form and I am feeling strong in saying “Skinny Skinny” goes directly to that painful place in my mind."

In the lyrics, Ashton sings: "Skinny skinny don't you think about the future, hey skinny skinny, too bad / Hey skinny skinny, stop your thinking 'bout tomorrow, you'll never make it like that, too bad."
